McKinney around the web

A collection of McKinney pieces found around the dubya-dubya-dubya:

Workers World is all over Cynthia McKinney.

Ever sit around wondering if Cynthia McKinney is anything like Ron Paul? Liberty Maven’s Ron Paul Paul-O-Meter gives McKinney a paltry 20 out of 99 in “on how closely they are in agreement with [...the perfection of...] Ron Paul…” This is not a bad thing if you look at the criteria in the article. (For the record, Obama scored 17, McCain 25, Ralph Nader 26, and Bob Barr & Chuck Baldwin 88 each.

The Chronicle of Higher Education has a piece slamming McKinney over the “security guard” incident, focusing on the redacted claim of racial profiling. Don’t read it unless you have a strong stomach.

From “The Swamp”, “Obama Worries Peace Movement” Frank James writes about how Obama’s words on war and peace are making those in the Peace Movement shudder and question their support for him. Quoting from a Kevin Zeese press-release, the article states:

… “Peace Voters are beginning to wonder whether this is more like LBJ vs. Goldwater, where Goldwater was the militaristic hawk and LBJ the candidate opposed to war. LBJ won in a landslide and then escalated the Vietnam war trapping the U.S. in a deadly and costly quagmire,” said Zeese.

That’s something; you don’t see Obama being likened to President Lyndon Johnson everyday but there you have it.

Of course, the obvious question to the peace movement is, if not Obama, who then?

They have an answer:

Peace voters — who were the foundation of his political success so far — do not have to continue to contribute or volunteer for his campaign. And, there are peace candidates running from across the political spectrum; on the right are Bob Barr, the Libertarian and Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party; on the left are Cynthia McKinney of the Green Party and independent, Ralph Nader. He needs to earn the vote of Americans opposed to further war.”

Lastly, the Atlanta Journal Constitution found the secret Newsweek interview with McKinney.

I wouldn’t characterize the Chronicle article as “slamming” McKinney. The article uses the Capitol incident to highlight the extent to which making accusations of racism has become off-limits in U.S. public discourse. That’s a valuable discussion to have.

Toward the end, the article raises some noncommittal questions about the value of the McKinney campaign, but that seems almost tacked on.

I am VERY concerned about the Workers World Party — a communist group that is even further out than the Socialist Workers Party from which it split in 1959, and which just congratulated & applauded North Korea (yes, North Korea) effusively on its 60th birthday - and its enthusiastic endorsement of CM. Has she enthusiastically accepted it? Does she understand what kind of group this is? Gloria LaRiva doesn’t even want to be part of WWP anymore - she went off and founded her own party and is that party’s candidate this year (Party for Socialism and Liberation).

I’m trying hard to stay enthusiastic about the McKinney/Clemente candidacy but their unprofessional campaign presence (endless & ridiculous spelling mistakes, clunky web pages, un-Green & unsustainable campaign material, etc.) has been frustrating. Plus, if she’s going to wrap her arms around communist groups that are certainly not going to be of any help in building the Green Party - groups that not even Norman Thomas wanted to have anything to do with - than I don’t blame people who go running off to Nader/Gonzalez.

Yes, the Communist Party USA endorsed Gore, Kerry, and Obama, and the KKK endorsed Reagan, but none of those candidates accepted those endorsements, enthusiastically or otherwise. I would like to see Cynthia McKinney clearly distance herself from the likes of the Workers World Party and I would hope all Green Party activists would feel the same way.

Greens and communists already form electoral coalitions in numerous European countries (Italy, Spain, Portugal, etc). In addition, all mainline communist parties (including the European ones I just mentioned) have friendly relations with the Workers Party of Korea, so there is nothing unusual about that. The WWP endorsement is only “freaking out” certain people here in the US due to this country’s McCarthyist history. The US needs an electoral left bloc (like Die Linke in Germany), not a bunch of small, warring sects.
