Going Beyond the “Middle Class” in the Election

The economic status of minorities in the US remains on the table. With the current economic crisis, this will not be addressed just by the election of Obama. Electing an African-American will not restructure urban economies. It will not end the environment of violence that so many African-Americans are forced to endure. It will not address the current economic incentive inherent in the drug market for urban dwellers. It will not reconstruct the crack houses into livable housing or provide housing for the homeless. It will not free prisoners of the drug war or provide meaningful rehabilitation.

Real change means things will really look different then it did before. President Obama has many challenges ahead of him, but we all need to recognize that the New Deal model did not impact differences in wages in African-American communities. It did not end segregation in the South. In point of fact, it led to the beginning of a migration northward into urban areas. Addressing the middle class alone will not touch the surface of political and economic inequities that remain.

In this period, more than ever, new ideas are not simply needed for election, but they are the difference between survival and destruction for millions of people. As a political party, our principles are attached to our candidates, our policy proposals and our Platform. It is not about what we say, but how we can clearly translate our principles into workable and effective governmental actions at all levels.

If we are to earn the support of poor and working people, the Green Party must demonstrate our ability to address their needs right now and our willingness to stand with them through the tough times to come.

Support Cynthia, now more than ever!

Amen, could not have said it better!

Thank you. We need to remember that tenants are being evicted from their apartments despite the fact that they have always paid their rent on time because the banks are foreclosing on the mortgages held by he owners. We need to recognize that 2.2 million people are incarcerated in the U.S. As the stock market continues to crash and credit is squeezed out of this economy more people will lose their jobs and pension safety net. Social Security has to be transformed to more than a supplement for those in dire need.

Is this what Cynthia McKinney said? Or is this from a different author who is supporting Cynthia McKinney.

    This is what I said.
