Normal, IL — Eleventh Congressional district candidate Jason Wallace expressed dismay Tuesday over the tone and lack of policy solutions in the race to succeed retiring representative Gerald Weller. Topics such as mudslinging, issue avoidance, and lack of original ideas are some of the themes which the candidate touched on. Wallace, the Green Party candidate, is running against Republican Marty Ozinga and Democrat Debbie Halvorson.
Wallace was critical of the negative character of the rhetoric of the campaign. This tone has characterized events such as debates and forums, as well as radio, television and print advertisements. “My opponents have taken every opportunity to publicly attack one another. Television and radio ads seem particularly negative in our race. Furthermore, debates and forums are opportunities to express and elaborate our views on topics that are of importance to the citizens. Instead, they waste their allotted times criticizing each other.”
Wallace believes that such negativity is part of the problem of voter apathy in the United States. According to the candidate, “when people watch a debate, they want to hear solutions to the problems they are encountering or specific policy proposals. My opponents have spent so much time at these events being negative, they have no time left for people to hear their views. Voters are left wondering what they will get if they vote for the Republican or Democratic candidates in the 11th district.”
Wallace was quick to add that he has consistently answered questions and has stayed away from negative advertising. The crux of his 10K08 campaign strategy was to limit his expenditures to ten thousand dollars and spend more time engaging the voters. “My campaign is a true grassroots movement. I’ve traveled all over the district and listened to the people. I’ve participated in forums and debates and I have tried to give direct answers to every question that has been posed. One thing is for certain: you may not agree with me on everything, but unlike my opponents, you will at least know where I stand.”
