Election Hangover of Hope

Posted in Editorials, Presidential Campaign on November 5th, 2008 by Ronald Hardy – 8 Comments

I think I share with many other Greens a deep sense of appreciation toward Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente for taking on one of the toughest jobs in America. They both spoke about building a movement, and I don’t think that work ended last night on Nov. 4. The political landscape has changed, and the Green Party will need to adapt to this new landscape and pursue new opportunities and leave old barriers behind us.

I am sure that there are many who might feel disappointed in these results, but I have to ask if you are really all that surprised by them? Cynthia McKinney was the only major candidate left off of CNN’s radar, and what “main stream media” coverage she did get (Washington Post, FoxNews) were hit pieces meant to further discredit the campaign. Cynthia McKinney is a 6 term Congresswoman with more experience in government than Obama, but she got less coverage than Chuck Baldwin, a radio minister. Wayne Allyn Root got more coverage than Cynthia McKinney. Why? Why the Blackout? It can’t be because she is an African American, can it? It can’t be because she is a woman, can it? Was it her message? Was it her lack of money?

However, I am not depressed by the outcome. The results of the Presidential election are of course disappointing, but on the other hand, over 150,000 Americans, of those who even had the opportunity, voted for Cynthia McKinney, despite the lack of coverage, despite the ballot access, and despite the politics of fear.

Congratulations to everyone who voted for the Green Party for sticking with your values and your beliefs.

Election results

Posted in Congressional Campaigns, Green Party Watch, National Greens, Presidential Campaign, Press Release, State Party News on November 4th, 2008 by Gregg Jocoy – 2 Comments

I will be webcasting election results via Green Party Watch Radio tonight starting at 7 PM East Coast Time. I will take a break from 9 to 10 PM, and return for a second session from 10 PM to midnight. I will have a chat room set up for questions and for folks to submit information. I hope to bring as many Green candidates as possible onto the program, so I invite any of you with information to call in to the show at (646) 478-3778. Of course, if you don’t have info but just want to shoot the breeze, well, that’s OK too. If you want to reach me with info but don’t want to be “on the air”, you can call me on my cell phone toll free at (877) 282-2236. If you have unlimited calling, please spare me the cost by calling me directly at (803) 984-5414.

I can call candidates as well as have them call me, so if you have a candidate you want me to reach out to, send me their number and a time to call and I’ll ring them up. You can send me that info at GreggJocoy@riseup.net. I hope to have both Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente on the show at some point, but I know they will be very busy tonight, so keep your fingers crossed for me.

The Exaltation of a Vote for McKinney & Clemente

Posted in Editorials, Presidential Campaign on November 4th, 2008 by Ronald Hardy – 7 Comments

Two weeks ago a friend called me up to tell me that she had just voted early for Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente and she was so overjoyed she had to call someone and tell them (and she knew I would answer my phone).

Last week my mother-in-law in Iowa, who is not very political and has likely voted Republican most of her life, called us with some “big news”, she was excited. She called to say that she “Voted Green Party for the first time ever, and it felt great!”

Early voting in my city has involved two hour waits, but this morning I had no wait at the polls (I guess everyone voted early) and got my ballot in minutes. Yes, there was a sense of exaltation to cast my vote for Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente. No doubts, no second thoughts, no throwing my vote away. Voting your values just feels good.

Green Party Election Results (and Commentary) Tomorrow

Posted in Congressional Campaigns, Green Party Watch, Presidential Campaign, State Party News on November 3rd, 2008 by Ronald Hardy – 1 Comment

We can assume that most media outlets won’t be covering Green Party results around the nation, that’s a given. However there are a number of ways on election night that Greens and green sympathizers can try to keep up with election results around the nation and chat with others about what is happening.

Of course your best bet is to stop by Green Party Watch over and over, where we will have several open thread posts for comments and several posts that we will try to keep updated throughout the evening with the latest (unofficial) results. I’m going to try not to drink too much so I can stay up late looking up obscure race results from State Election Board sites.

Meanwhile, Gregg Jocoy will be on Green Party Watch Radio (see link on the right side bar) from 7-9 p.m. EST and again 10 p.m. – midnight EST reporting results and hey, guess what? You can call in!

OnTheWilderside.com will be live blogging election night and invites folks over to party:

Hope you will join us here at onthewilderside.com on Tuesday, Nov 4th, starting at 8pm and ending at 12 midnight or when the Presidential results are announced, whichever comes first. We are going to have live blogging of “Alternative Election Night Coverage“. Kimberly Wilder will be at the helm. Ian Wilder will chime in after the local meeting he has to attend. Hope to gather e-mail comments from activist colleagues and bloggers, in addition to a scan of some of our favorite sources: Green Party Watch, Independent Political Report, Ballot Access News, Third Party Watch, News for Greens, Greens for Greens and just, plain old “Google News”. Since we will be on the ground, and armed with poll watching certificates, we will probably have local numbers and anecdotes to report.

Green Change is hosting an Election Night Blogging Party, with 20 featured races, places to comment and report results, post pictures, etc., and a sweet chat room (if you can find it) where you can cheer and curse with others.

Our election night party will also feature:
* A live chat room with Greens from around the world
* Breaking results from top Green races around the country
* Discussion of 2008 results as well as future strategy
* Pictures, videos, music and more

Sign up to join our online election night party

So don’t feel all alone on Election night – hook up with others and hope for some celebrations!

UPDATE: Another option for Election Night is from Secret Frequency, podcasts with Steve Kramer. I apologize for forgetting to mention this before!

Brainy children ‘likely to vote Green’

Posted in General on November 3rd, 2008 by deesings – Comments Off

According to a study summarized in the Times Online:

Cleverer children are more likely to vote for the Green Party or the Liberal Democrats in a general election than other parties when they become adults, research suggests. The study, by the University of Edinburgh and the UK Medical Research Council and published in the journal Intelligence, indicates that childhood IQ is as important as social class in determining political allegiance. The IQs of more than 6,000 subjects were recorded at the age of 10, before any secondary schooling. Twenty-four years later they were asked about their voting habits.
