Iowa & Wisconsin Green Parties Sue Davenport, Iowa

June 30, 2009 in Grassroots Democracy, State Party News

Last year two Wisconsin Greens went to Iowa to help Iowa Greens get Cynthia McKinney on the ballot. They hit Iowa City, and several other cities, before going to Davenport, IA for the Bix Street Fest, a large event with lots of people – ideal for gathering signatures. Event organizers DavenportOne confronted the petitioners and tried to force them to leave the streets of Davenport. They called the police.

The ACLU of Iowa took up the case and now the Green Party of the United States, The Wisconsin Greens and the Green Party of Iowa are suing Davenport for violating their first amendment rights to petition.

Don DeBar reports on McKinney for WBAI in Exile

Rev. Billy makes the news

June 30, 2009 in Local Elections

Just as the death of Michale Jackson sucked all the oxygen out of the media’s air, making all other news disappear, the Israeli government’s apparent abduction of Cynthia McKinney has been the focus of much of what is going on here. That is as it should be. Never before has another nation taken a Green Party presidential nominee captive.

Even so, other news has happened, and some of it deserves notice here.

One piece of news is an article about Reverend Billy Talen and his campaign for Mayor of New York City. The piece, at City Limits covers both Rev. Billy as well as other candidates seeking to replace Billionaire mayor Michael Bloomberg.

So could the Green Party candidate for mayor, the activist performance artist Rev. Billy Talen, who leads his own Church of Life After Shopping. While the Greens usually mount a mayoral campaign that attracts but a hint of voter support, they’ve never had a candidate armed with a blonde bouffant, a gospel choir, and the supposed power to exorcise demons from Starbucks shops, Wal-Marts and even personal credit cards.

H/T to Michael Emperor.

Ronald Kane Hardy, founder of Green Party Watch, was told by our hosting company that the site has gotten a sudden burst of hits, leading to the site being intermittently unavailable. They inform us that the site hosting has been transferred to another hosting machine to deal with the new traffic. That does not come without a cost.

For the first time since Green Party Watch was established over a year ago we are considering turning to you, our readers, for help. No decisions have been made about how to do this, and we don’t anticipate a huge need, but it is not fair to have Ron carry this burden alone. We hope that, if we can figure out how to do so, many of you will offer small donations to defray the costs of keeping GPW available as your best source for Green Party news and views.

More on McKinney

June 30, 2009 in National Greens, Press Release

First, I got a return call from the Israeli consulate in Atlanta and the consulate employee told me that the Israeli Defense Force and Israeli Foreign Affairs office has released information he read which says that Cynthia McKinney is not being detained by the Israeli government. He said that she “had done this sort of thing before” and that she does so “to get in the papers”.

He said that the humanitarian aid onboard the ship will be delivered to Gaza via a land route. He explained that delivery via water was forbidden but land routes have been authorized. He said the ships were boarded without any shots fired and taken to an Israeli port.

Below is the most recent news from the national office:

ISRAELI MISSION
800 Second Avenue
(Second Avenue @ 43rd St.)
[New York City]

Last night, Israeli Occupation Forces attacked and boarded the Free Gaza Movement boat, the SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, abducting 21 human rights workers from 11 countries, including Noble laureate Mairead Maguire and former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. The passengers and crew are being forcibly dragged toward Israel.

The seizure of humanitarian supplies and abduction of human rights workers is an act of piracy, a crime under international law. When the boat was attacked, it was not in Israeli waters and was on a human rights mission to Gaza. Israel’s deliberate and premeditated attack on an unarmed boat in international waters is a clear violation of international law. Join us tomorrow from 4 to 6 pm at the Israeli Mission to demand an immediate and unconditional release of the SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, all 21 human rights workers, and the humanitarian supplies.

According to an International Committee of the Red Cross report released yesterday, the Palestinians living in Gaza are “trapped in despair.” Thousands of Gazans whose homes were destroyed earlier during Israel’s December/January massacre are still without shelter despite pledges of almost $4.5 billion in aid, because Israel refuses to allow cement and other building material into the Gaza Strip. The report also notes that hospitals are struggling to meet the needs of their patients due to Israel’s disruption of medical supplies.

Let the Humanitarian Aid through!
Free Cynthia McKinney and all kidnapped human rights workers!
Stop the blockade of Gaza!

Green Party: President Obama and the US State Dept. must demand release of Cynthia McKinney and 20 other human rights activists on Free Gaza relief boat seized by Israeli gunboats

• The Free Gaza’s ‘Spirit of Humanity’ was delivering medical and other supplies following Obama’s call for relief to wartorn Gaza; the boat was in international waters

WASHINGTON, DC — Green Party leaders are calling on the White House and US State Department to intervene and demand the immediate release of 21 human rights activists, including former US Rep. Cynthia McKinney and Nobel laureate Mairead Maguire, who were taken prisoner by the Israeli navy after gunboats surrounded and seized the Free Gaza Movement relief boat ‘Spirit of Humanity’ on Monday.

“This is an outrageous violation of international law against us. Our boat was not in Israeli waters, and we were on a human rights mission to the Gaza Strip,” said Cynthia McKinney, the Green Party’s 2008 candidate for President of the United States. “President Obama just told Israel to let in humanitarian and reconstruction supplies, and that’s exactly what we tried to do. We’re asking the international community to demand our release so we can resume our journey.”

Read Cynthia McKinney’s latest statement here.

Ms. McKinney had earlier sent appeals to President Obama and the State Department for assurances of protection for the relief mission. The Spirit of Humanity was sailing in international waters when it was seized. Greens stressed that the relief boat represents no threat to Israel and must be allowed to continue its voyage to Gaza.

For more information and updates, see the Free Gaza Movement web site, including the latest release on the seizure of the relief boat

For communications and updates from Cynthia McKinney, visit her Green Party page and blog.

The Spirit of Humanity was carrying medical supplies, cement, olive trees, and childrens toys to Gaza after the Israeli invasion in December and January damaged or destroyed 50,000 homes, 800 industrial properties and 200 schools damaged or destroyed, 39 mosques, and two churches. The supplies were confiscated by the Israeli navy.

The Green Party of the United States condemned the invasion and massacre of Palestinians and has endorsed the call for boycott, divestment, and sanctions against Israel until the Israeli government
guarantees full human rights, including political rights and democracy, for all Palestinians and non-Jewish Israelis.

Cynthia McKinney Reportedly Taken Captive By Israeli Navy

June 30, 2009 in Peace & Non-Violence, Social & Economic Justice

The latest from www.freegaza.org reports that the humanitarian vessel Spirit of Humanity has been attacked and boarded by the Israelis 23 miles off the coast of Gaza. Former US Congresswoman and Presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney is among the 21 human rights workers taken prisoner off the ship.

Ohio High court: Prevailing-wage law has limits

Ohio High court: Prevailing-wage law has limits

Business First of Columbus

The Ohio Supreme Court on Wednesday shortened the reach of state’s prevailing wage law, ruling it applies only to companies working directly on public-improvement project sites.

The court in a 6-1 decision reinstated a Medina County trial court’s ruling in favor of Gene’s Refrigeration Heating and Air Conditioning of Medina. The company was sued by an area labor union representing an employee who worked in a fabrication shop that supplied products to a public construction project.

That employee allowed the union to mount its case in 2005, when it alleged Gene’s violated prevailing wage statutes by paying the worker and other employees supplying the project rates lower than union workers at the site.

The state law generally requires that employees working directly on government buildings and other public improvements must be paid at a rate similar to what union workers are paid for doing similar work in the region.

The Ohio 9th District Court of Appeals in Akron reversed the Medina County trial court’s decision before the dispute moved to the state Supreme Court.

Justice Paul Pfeifer was the lone dissenter in the decision.

Once again we see Ohio’s High Court rule against the lower , working, and middle class of Ohioans when it come to fair wages and pay. The Green Party opposes such court rulings!

Israeli Navy Surrounds Free Gaza Ship With Cynthia McKinney On Board

June 29, 2009 in Peace & Non-Violence, Presidential Campaign

Breaking news is coming in regularly from www.freegaza.org, and at this time it appears that the ship Spirit of Humanity, carrying Cynthia McKinney and tons of humanitarian supplies destined for Gaza has been intercepted by the Israeli Navy. The Israeli’s are jamming the Spirit’s radar, GPS and navigation systems, forcing it to navigate by old fashioned compass. Apparently the Israelis are threatening the Spirit if they don’t turn back from Gaza, and reports are vague about where the ships currently are.

The Spirit of Humanity left Cyprus earlier today (Monday) with fewer passengers and were reportedly engaged and threatened by the Israeli naval vessels at 1:40 a.m. local time.

Cynthia McKinney reportedly said to supporters: “”I am extremely angry. We demand that the Israeli government call off their attack dogs. We are unarmed civilians aboard an unarmed boat delivering medical and reconstruction aid to other human beings in Gaza. Why in God’s name would Israel want to attack us and threaten our safety and welfare. I call on President Obama and the international community to intervene now to prevent this situation from escalating with potentially drastic results to the civilians on board.”

McKinney Gaza update and appeal

June 29, 2009 in Peace & Non-Violence

In an appeal to supporters across the globe, Congresswoman and 2008 Green Party presidential nominee Cynthia McKinney has called for phone calls and email messages to Israeli leaders to demand an end to what are described as illegal actions to prevent her and others from reaching Gaza with humanitarian aid. The full text, from Free Gaza, follows.

FROM FREE GAZA @ 826PM EST 6/29/09

We just spoke to the passengers. Everyone is OK, but the situation is still very tense. They continue to be surrounded by Israeli warships which are threatening to open fire. The Israeli Navy is actively jamming all navigation systems in violation of international maritime law, endangering the people on board.

Former U.S. Congresswoman, Cynthia McKinney, speaking from on board the SPIRIT, stated, “I am extremely angry.

Since the boat’s navigation equipment is being jammed, it has turned westward in order to stay in international waters. The Captain and crew are working from the most ancient of navigation equipment…the compass to stay clear of Israeli waters.

Dear Friends,

We just spoke again with our people aboard the Spirit of Humanity. The Israeli Navy is continuing to try and intimidate the ship, and is actively jamming its radar, GPS, and navigation systems in direct violation of international maritime law. This jamming is extremely dangerous and directly threatens the welfare and safety of everyone aboard our civilian ship.

Because their instrumentation is being jammed, they are using compass & paper to attempt to navigate. They are in international waters & they believe their location is approximately 110km off of the town of Hadera. Everyone is tired but determined. They are not being deterred by the Israeli aggression & are continuing toward Gaza. Please help them.
