Many, many inmates should be released. However, turning them out with $200 and a bus ticket to no where is not the way to rebuild a life, or to save money in the long run. We need life and job skills training and some coaching and support to help ex-offenders become responsible citizens and reduce the recidivism rate. California has the highest percent of people returning to prison and the highest cost while they are they. Something is very wrong. The unjust parole denials for serious offenders who have served their time and are not, or no longer are, dangerous, replacing mental hospitals with prison time, and the broken, overwhelmed parole system is ruining salvageable lives and families, while costing lots and lots of tax payer dollars.
