Green Party’s Howie Hawkins Running For Mayor

UPDATE: The Syracuse Post-Standard apparently “guessed wrong” as Hawkins announced he is running for 4th District Councilor. See: http://www.howiehawkins.com/index.php

The Syracuse Post-Standard is reporting that Howie Hawkins will be announcing that he is running for Mayor of Syracuse, NY.

“The Green Party is entering this election, first of all, to follow through on the full implementation of living wages and public power, two reforms that we first raised in city elections and placed on the city’s agenda,” Hawkins said. “We also intend to put new reforms on the city’s agenda, reforms that are critical to the economic viability, environmental sustainability and fiscal health of the city.”

Hawkins is a life long political activist, and has been involved with the Green Party in the US for 25 years. He is a dedicated campaigner, having run in the past for City Council, Mayor, County Executive, State Comptroller, US House of Representatives, and US Senate. He received 3.3% of the vote in his 2008 campaign for US House of Representatives.

In the article, it says that Howie Hawkins is running for office, but I couldn’t find anywhere where it said he’s running for mayor. Earlier this year, he told an interviewer that he’s more likely to run for an at-large seat on the city council. His comments in this article about choosing a race he’s more likely to win cause me to think that he’s going to decide on the city council race.

And in fact the article was wrong. Thanks to David D. for pointing this out – Hawkins is running for a council position.

  3. And sadly Howie is the only Green Party candidate, according to Howie’s remarks, running in all of Syracuse.

    That sucks.

Good luck Howie. Thank you for continuing to charge forward.

  4. Dave Schwab says:

Here’s what Howie had to say about that:

“The Greens would have liked to run a full slate of candidates for mayor and every council seat up for election. We had some excellent possibilities. But, frankly, issues of their job security or their business’s survival in this tough economy narrowed down the field to me. We have some excellent future candidates in the pipeline, but this year I will be the Green Party’s only candidate.”

His reasons for running the race he’s running seem solid. I just don’t understand why he’s starting relatively late in the season.
