Youngstown, Ohio, once one of the great steel towns in America, no longer holds a Labor Day Parade.
Today, the Mahoning Valley Greens held an “unofficial” parade by walking down the sidewalks that our grandfathers and fathers walked to the old steel mill areas and held a brief ceremony and salute at one of the old entrances to the Steel Mills on the Center Street Bridge.
It has been said “Labor Day differs in every essential way from other holidays of the year in any country… Labor Day is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race or nation.” Quoted by Samuel Gompers, founder and president of the American Federation of Labor. The underlying philosophy is that observance of Labor Day is dedicated social and economic achievements of American workers, a national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country.
Happy Labor Day from the Mahoning Valley Greens from Youngstown, Ohio !
