SC Green Party governor candidate visits Charleston
June 28, 2010 in State Wide Elections
South Carolina Green Party gubernatorial candidate Morgan Reeves garnered media coverage for a visit to Charleston where he discussed his ideas for the state. The Charleston Post and Courier reports:
Reeves said he would push toward establishing high speed rail between the state’s major cities, an ethanol plant that would convert sweet potatoes into fuel, and luring a manufacturer of hydrogen cars.
WCSC Channel 5 also covered Reeves’ visit:
One of Reeves’ top issues is education reform to help children succeed in the future. He said he wants a major overhaul of the current system, putting kids in school year-round with four breaks during the school year.
“The year-round school will eliminate a lot of children going into the streets, becoming gang members, and going to jail,” Reeves said.

Thank you for post.

We’re running a Senate campaign against Alvin Green and this guy is running for governor to defend Alvin Green from the party? Also, I thought ethanol was controversial in the green party. Also, many of us left the democrats because we don’t like centrism and the fact that the democrats won’t oppose the republicans on anything major. This guy seems like a green Alvin Green.

I disagree with the Ethanol plan as well. Being from Iowa and living currently in Wisconsin, I am very familiar with state subsidized ethanol. Food for Fuel is wrong. Fuel efficiency and decreased consumption is right.
However don’t mix up Green Party candidates with the Green Party itself. Candidates are their own campaigns, although typically endorsed by the state Green Party.
What does this have to do with Alvin Green?

Read the article. The candidate said he is running as a green because he is angry at the democrats for refusing to endorse Alvin Green.

Reeves appeared encouraged by Alvin Greene’s surprise win in the June 8 Democratic U.S. Senate primary and called Democrats hypocrites for asking him to leave the race in the wake of his pending felony pornography charge.
“God is working in the world and made Alvin Greene win,” he said. “It will show you that we need to rediscover who God is in South Carolina.”
…
He sympathized with Democratic Senate candidate Alvin Greene, saying democrats haven’t been fair to him.
“Look at what the Democrats are doing right now,” Reeves said. They’re taking an African American man and trying to run him off their ballot. That’s the most racist thing you can do. The Republicans on the other end are making the rich richer and the poor poorer. This is why I’m running as an Independent.”
Morgan Reeves was in the race before Alvin Greene won the primary, so Greene’s win can’t have inspired him to run. He’s probably just encouraged that the underdog won. Aside from that, he’s trying to score some points on the SC Democrats for being such a mess.
I also disagree with ethanol, and probably a few other points of Reeves’ platform, but I’m glad he’s running as a Green in SC. Gregg Jocoy would probably be in a better position to answer your questions about the SC Green ticket.
