Roseanne Barr to seek Green Party Presidential Nomination

Ballot Access News reports:

Roseanne Barr has taken several steps to make it possible for her to seek the Green Party presidential nomination. She filed with the Federal Election Commission on January 25, and she has fulfilled the requirements of the Green Party to seek the nomination. She is a registered Green Party member in California, although she also has a home in Hawaii.

  1. Shelly Leit says:

Come on. I have nothing against Roseanne as an entertainer, but this is stupid. I am a big supporter of the Green Party but to advance they need serious candidates who are policy wonks and science-oriented, not celebrities. The Green Party should not be a repository for celebrities hoping to extend their fame. She is not a serious candidate and anyone who supports her in this is also not serious. The Green Party needs to get SERIOUS.

    • Carla Corman says:

She is serious. I have heard her speak for years on political subjects. She may be a comedian, but she has some good ideas. She is for the working people. We someone on our side! Gary Johnson is flirting with it also.

    • Barbara Louise says:

The trouble is, everytime there s a third party candidate, a progressive, the liberal or progressve vote is split, and the conservative candidate wins. Those who refuse to study history are doomed to repeat it.

      • Dave Schwab says:

So tell all the progressives you know to stop voting for pro-war, pro-Wall Street, pro-fossil fuel politicians and start voting for the Green Party!

      • Robert says:

Youre absolutely right! That’s how Bush Sr and Ross Perot defeated Bill Clinton. /sarcasm

      • Seth Warren says:

Perhaps it wouldn’t be if 1.) more people woke up and realised that Obama is not a progressive and 2.) the legacy parties were as gung-ho about allowing people their right to vote for whomever they see fit rather than maintaining their duopoly.

    • Yeah its politics, just as Ralph Nader got people to look at the Green Party’s agenda, so can Barr, in either case they need the smart guys in the backrooms behind them. Afterall, she’s got seed money. Of course the Dems will grab the best ideas & tote them as their own, but maybe that’s a win.

  2. Kyle says:

Anybody who is willing to go through the process, and especially pay the filling fee is welcome. The Green Party has a lot of (expensive) work to do in preparing for ballot access. Her filing is not an endorsement by the Green Party, nor is there anything about the Green Party selecting her. The Green Party IS serious.

  3. Jack Wagner says:

Isn’t this what a Primary is? The “Green Party” endorses what ever candidate wins their Primary, right? Isn’t that the “Nominee”? It’s Democracy correct? The Party is a “recognized political union” that is able to hold ballot access if it performs within a “Democratic process.”

I support Jill and Kent, I’d like to see a Stein/Mesplay 2012 ticket. Done. But having Barr in the process and debate…well, it’s a “free world.”

Side note: Go California Green Party!

  4. Colin says:

If the Green Party officially endorses this woman, I have some serious re-thinking to do about staying with this party. This will set the Green Party’s credibility back 25 years.

    • Terrance Tovar says:

What credibility are you talking about? Most people I talk to dont know we exist – think we are like green peace or thing we are a joke of party only concerned about pot legalization.

  5. Ben Schattenburg says:

Colin, I’m certain that Jill Stein will be our candidate and NOT Roseanne.

    • David C says:

Ben, why are you so certain of that ??? And, if I read you correctly, why are you so certain Jill would be better than Roseanne ???

      • Ben Schattenburg says:

… ‘Cause she also claimed she wanted to run for prime minister of Israel. If that doesn’t demonstrate a lack of seriousness, I don’t know what does.

  6. Dave Schwab says:

If you want to help make sure that Jill Stein wins the Green nomination, volunteer for her campaign today!

  7. Myles Hoenig says:

Roseanne is a serious individual with a lot of credibility. So what that she’s an entertainer. If she can express GP values in a serious and credible way, then let there be a competition from within.
Jill Stein is serious, too, but does she have the strength to go up against the 1% Titans, including the media for when they deny the GP a spot in the debates? Let’s see.
As long as she/they don’t do anything stupid like coming out for Qadaffi as they oppose NATO.

    • Terrance Tovar says:

Agreed Myles. Im sorry Greens but many of you are talking as if our party has credibility. We dont……not like your thinking. All Greens should be happy if she would be willing to represent us. We have over 130k members in CA alone…..and we have no money and no higher offices to show for it.

  8. The All Party System (and independents) is kicking off on February 1st 2012 with nominations for 60 days, through the end of March. If you want to coordinate for fair elections under pure proportional representation, this is a great time to self nominate your name (or someone else’ name to represent you).

Are you tired of the road blocks that party bosses of all parties are placing by individuals who want to be part of a team to find solutions? Well we at the 8th USA Parliament have the most exact and proportional tool for building such a team. We use ranked choice voting under that Sainte-Lague parliament seat distribution system, and our own innovation; ranked choice consensus voting.

Please be sure to contact us to sign up, we’re helping to transform the USA through a peaceful orderly and harmonious process, with ranked choive ballots kept as proof.

    Nominate a new Cabinet Minister

  9. Gary Swing says:

Is Roseanne Barr really seeking the Green Party’s presidential nomination? I know she made a satirical presidential campaign announcement a long time ago as a “Green Tea Party” candidate. Has she, in fact, fulfilled the requirements of the GPUS to be a certified Green presidential candidate? I couldn’t find anything about it on the GPUS website. Maybe it’s just not up yet. I support an open and democratic nominating process for political candidates. If Roseanne wants to participate in the nominating process, that’s great.

Political satire can be a useful tool for promoting political reform, but there should also be a serious underlying message. So, what is the message? The Green Party’s presidential nominee should have a strong campaign platform or promote the national platform.

I would like to have the Green Party nominate a presidential candidate who will take a strong stand against US military imperialism and emphasize the importance of proportional voting systems for legislative elections so that we can break up the two party system and establish a more legitimate form of government.

However, I think it’s more important to encourage progressives to run as Green Party candidates for smaller offices. A full slate of Green Party candidates for Congress would be excellent. We have no chance of winning the presidential election and virtually no chance of breaking the 5% barrier at that level. The important thing is the message. A full slate of Green Party candidates for Congress would be excellent. Would the California Greens be interested in nominating Roseanne Barr for a smaller office?

  10. Lou says:

Anyone recall where United States Senator Al Franken (D-MN) got his start?
