72 Green Party State Legislative Candidates 2012

Three U.S. Greens have been elected to State Legislative partisan office over the years: Audie Bock (CA – 1999); John Eder (ME – 2002-06); and Richard Carroll (AR – 2008).

2012 has the potential to elect another. Over 70 candidates are running for State Legislative seats across the country.  In Maine, small state legislative districts have made Greens very competitive over the years, particularly in the Portland area.  Two years ago, Brunswick resident Fred Horch finished just 140 votes behind the Democrat in a three way race for the Maine State House District 66. He beat the Republican by over 250 votes in an incredibly close election.  This year Horch is running again, along with Tom MacMillan, Asher Platts and others with a serious chance at winning a seat in the Maine Legislature.

Texas leads all states with 15 state assembly candidates, and Connecticut has 10 candidates, including one of our favorites to make an impact today, Melissa Schlag. New York has 13 candidates, Maine has 8, and even Tennessee has four candidates for state assembly.  In all, 72 candidates for state legislative seats are running in 18 states.

Fred Horch
