The Green Party has finally broken through at the provincial level and will form a presence in British Columbia’s new government.

Andrew Weaver won the riding of Oak Bay – Gordon Head with 3,489 votes. It marks the first time that a member of the Green Party has been elected to B.C.’s legislature.

“We didn’t split the vote, we are the vote in Oak Bay – Gordon Head,” said Weaver during his victory to a crowd of supporters Tuesday evening.

The Liberal incumbent Ida Chong was pushed into third place.

The MLA’s victory follows that of federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, who won Saanich-Gulf Islands from former cabinet minister Gary Lunn in the 2011 federal election.
