Green for Greens: Matt Funiciello (NY) for Congress

Green For Greens is about highlighting some of the most exciting Green candidates across the United States – and asking our readers to contribute what they can to help these candidates succeed. We are committed to building a party of peace, justice, democracy and ecology, free of corporate money and control, and the best way to do that is by supporting the courageous candidates who are spreading our message and building our party every day.

p matt funiciello farmAlong with Howie Hawkins’ campaign for governor, Matt Funiciello’s surging run for US House of Representatives in northern NY (District 21) has been raising the profile of the Green Party as New York’s third major party. Funiciello, who owns the Rock Hill Bakehouse in Glens Falls, is polling in double digits for an open seat, despite the fact that outside interests have spent millions promoting his Democratic and Republican opponents. Like Hawkins, Funiciello’s poll numbers are similar to Jesse Ventura’s before strong debate performances propelled Ventura to win the Minnesota governor’s race in 1998.

On October 8th, Funiciello participated in a 3-way debate with Democrat Aaron Woolf and Republican Elise Stefanik – watch the debate online here. In the debate, he called for a $15/hour minimum wage, single-payer “Medicare For All” healthcare, ending US military involvement in the Middle East, and transitioning from military spending to a Green New Deal job creation program.
