The Green Party of the United States will host a broadcast of President Obama’s final State of the Union address on Tuesday, January, on the party’s livestream YouTube channel. An online chat will take place during the speech, with Green Party candidates commenting as well.
Candidates slated to appear include U.S. Senate candidates Joe DeMare (Ohio), Margaret Flowers (Maryland), Arn Menconi (Colorado), and Shamako Noble (California); and U.S. House candidates Matt Funiciello (New York 21st District) and Joe Manchik (Ohio 12th District). Green Party national co-chair Andrea Mérida will host the event.
Green Party National Co-Chair Andrea Mérida spoke with Truthout about mass incarceration and prison reform. She said the Green Party wants “‘to make a deep analysis of the neoliberal policy that impacts the situation’…pointing out that mass incarceration is ‘not just simply about bigotry.'”
Truthout says the Green Party platform “maintains that justice systems should be ‘based in love, compassion, nonviolence and humility, while at the same time provide protection for those who have been harmed and for the rest of society.’ The party particularly promotes systems of restorative and transformative justice that advance crime prevention by ‘looking at the systemic roots of crime in inequality and alienation.'”
Green Party activists led by national co-chair Andrea Mérida are launching an effort to create an Indigenous Caucus within the party.
“Greens who identify as Native American/Indigenous, as well as non-Greens who might be interested in joining” have been invited to take part in a teleconference planning session Tuesday evening at 8:00 p.m. EDT.
