– McKinney – Clemente Nominated by Green Party –

Cynthia McKinney won the Green Party’s Presidential Nomination at its Chicago Convention, taking 313 of 532 first round ballots in an eight way contested race to lead the 2008 Party’s Peace slate.

Once securing the nomination, she asked the Convention to also nominate as her running mate, Rosa Clemente, Bronx born activist, journalist, scholar and organizer who helped to found the HipHop Political Convention. Clemente said, “I chose to do this, not for me, but for my generation, my community and my daughter. I don’t see the Green Party as an alternative. I see it as imperative.”

It appears that CSPAN’s Road to the White House will carry the Acceptance Speech, today, Sunday, July 13th, at 6:00 pm and again at 9:00 pm. read more »

cynthia mckinney on education – only a sick government would place a banker between a student and her education…
cynthia on peace and justice - the green party is a peace party, the green vote is a peace vote…need real discussion of race and gender.
cynthia celebrates her family – her son growing up in her legislative office, how her mom helped keep peace between cynthia and her dad when they had political differences…we need an opposition party…we will proclaim our presence in every nook and cranny in the nation…

Here is what is posted so far:

cynthia news etc - we have a pressbox at convention. if this works we can live blog. the black caucus delegates will be…cynthia mckinney’s parents. kw

ny mess up - ny had the right to 4o delegates. we were prepared to vote them. it appears we may only get 3o something due to filing error. people are deliberating. otherwise a few states lost 1 or 2 delegates on tehnicalities.

credential overall - the overall credential report is that there was only one pre-convention challenge and it was ruled out of order.

yucky obama mention - cliff thorton is a keynote speaker at this convention. he just did a subtle obama message. there was stunned silence and I think one note of applause. not a nice word to drop when you have the platform.

ny got 36 vote – checking all – vote on credential report now. credntialing report accepted. 4 no votes from NY. NY has 36, not 40 delegates.

forming latino caucus on platform – cece and other members of the forming latino caucus ask for a no vote on platform. the black caucus joins concern in solidarity. the caucuses do not like guest worker programs. also concerns about process of platform committee

heavy No votes on proposed 2008 GP platform – if the proposed platform fails, the 2004 platform becomes the default 2008 platform

Platform fails 284-195 - largely on the strength of the complaint of the forming Latino Caucus, the proposed 2008 Green Party platform was voted down. Delegates from New York and California voted heavily No. The 2004 platform now becomes the 2008 platform. This is true grassroots democracy. You not see anything like this at the corporate Democratic & Republican conventions.

jesse sings a song of earth – jesse johnson is a green presidential candidate from west virginia. he just led the audience in a crosby stills and nash (and young?) song dedicated to the fallen. “mother earth will swallow you lay your body down. great speech. also a nice phrase: find the zen in citizen. he is now telling a story and holding wilted sunflowers

Pacifica to air GPUS Convention

The GPUS convention will be aired live at Pacifica Radio,  which will air a live three-hour broadcast from the Green Party Convention in Chicago on Sunday, July 13th as the convention comes to a close.

The broadcast will air Sunday, July 13th, 12 to 3 PM EDT (11 AM to 2 PM CDT; 9 AM to 12 PDT)

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — The Green Party of the United States opened its 2008 national convention at the Palmer House Hilton in downtown Chicago on Thursday, July 10 and continued with numerous meetings on Friday.

Greens are also preparing for the party’s presidential nomination, which will take place on Saturday, July 12, at the Chicago Symphony Center, 220 South Michigan Avenue.

Blogging from GPUS Convention

I have been informed by GPUS National Committee members on site in Chicago that there is no internet or cell phone reception at the venue for the GPUS convention.  So I’m guessing the blogging here will be intermittent.  I will attempt to post things from afar as I see news items appear in various places, until such time as Gregg or Ron can start uploading news to Green Party Watch….
