U.S. War on Syria? Green Shadow Cabinet mobilizes against White House Cabinet

p Jill Stein Syria rallyFrom the Green Shadow Cabinet:

As the White House seeks authorization from Congress for illegal, aggressive war by the United States, polling continues to show that the majority of the American people oppose the use of our military to “punish” the Syrian government. Meanwhile, members of the Green Shadow Cabinet are working in concert with others in the peace movement to turn public opinion into political consequences.

Dr. Jill Stein, President of the opposition cabinet, joined Saturday’s anti-war march in Boston, telling the assembled hundreds that, “It would be unconstitutional, illegal, immoral, and a potential catastrophe to attack Syria,” according to the Boston Globe. Later that day, President Obama announced that he would not unilaterally attack Syria, and that instead he would ask Congress for an authorization for the use of military force.

Antiwar demonstrations took place across the United States this past week. It is impossible to know what the impact of these protests has been so far. But there can be no doubt that similar protests in the United Kingdom this past week led to Parliament voting to deny Prime Minister Cameron authorization for military action against Syria.

In the coming days, the Green Shadow Cabinet will release additional information about how Americans can – and should - make public opposition to attacking Syria a political reality for those in Washington, DC.

Following are statements issued by the Cabinet regarding Syria this past year, concluding with a call for resistance to war on Syria: Continue Reading

Green Party opposes threats of U.S. intervention in Syria and Obama’s ‘blank check’ abuse of military power

green party earthflowerFrom the Green Party of the United States:

The Green Party of the United States opposes threats by the Obama Administration to launch an attack on Syria and said that an order to attack would be a serious abuse of presidential power. Greens called for repeal of the Authorization to Use Military Force (AUMF) passed by Congress on September 18, 2001, which the two most recent presidential administrations have used to justify attacks on other nations.

Green Party leaders said that the accusations by the U.S., widely reported in U.S. media, that the Assad regime has used deadly nerve gas against rebellious civilians have been contradicted by numerous reports in foreign media, which claim that rebel factions have used chemical weapons.

In response to the Obama Administration’s pushback against the U.N. probe, Greens insisted that U.N. inspectors must be allowed to continue their investigation of chemical weapons in Syria and that the investigation must also address who used the weapons (“In Rush to Strike Syria, U.S. Tried to Derail U.N. Probe,” by Gareth Porter, Inter Press Service, August 27, 2013,http://www.ipsnews.net/2013/08/in-rush-to-strike-syria-u-s-tried-to-derail-u-n-probe/).

“The U.S. should use its clout to broker a cease-fire, with diplomatic persuasion for Turkey and Saudi Arabia to stop arming the rebels and Russia and Iran to stop arming Assad,” said Jill Stein, 2012 Green presidential nominee (http://www.jillstein.org). “U.S. military intervention will make it impossible for us to bring the two sides together for a political solution. We will sacrifice the only real pathway to peace for an act that can only pour gasoline on the fire. President Obama’s rush to war risks a repeat of 2003, when President Bush’s order to invade Iraq prevented U.N. inspectors from discovering that Saddam Hussein’s alleged WMDs, one of the stated reasons for war, did not exist.” Continue Reading

Green Shadow Cabinet: Pardon Bradley Manning, Use foreign aid to support democracy, not militarism

p Jill SteinFrom the Green Shadow Cabinet:

A presidential pardon for Bradley Manning

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

Today the Green Shadow Cabinet calls on President Obama to pardon Bradley Manning for his courageous work exposing U.S. war crimes and State Department deception. Thanks to Manning’s revelations of Iraqi deaths and human rights abuses by the American military, Iraq refused to renew immunity for U.S. soldiers, forcing President Obama to pull out at the end of 2011. Thus, Manning deserves much of the credit for ending the immoral, devastating, multi-trillion dollar U.S. occupation of Iraq.

Green Shadow Cabinet Independence Day Resolution: Revolt against the TPP and global corporate rule

green shadow cabinetFrom the Green Shadow Cabinet:

On this 4th of July, are you resolved to live in a free and democratic society, independent of global corporate rule? Will you act to shut down the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and other efforts by the owners and managers of global corporations to replace We the People with We the Corporations?

If you want to know why the members of the Green Shadow Cabinet are united in our opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, all you need to do is read the thirteen statements our officers have issued over the past month, listed below, detailing the impact of the TPP on small and community businesses, on your daily life, on human rights, on trade policy, on the poorest among us, on war and peace, on workers rights, on food and agriculture, on the power of corporations, on the rule of law, on public health and safety, on access to housing, on access to health care, and you can read our statement on the need for resistance to the TPP.

Read these statements. Understand that the TPP is a global corporate coup. And resolve to join us in taking action to stop the TPP.

The Green Shadow Cabinet is a supporter of Flush the TPP, a campaign to stop the Trans-Pacific Partnership. This new campaign is based on past successful efforts to stop so-called “free trade” agreements that put corporate power ahead of people and the planet. This summer, this campaign is planning “TPP Tuesdays” – weekly actions on Tuesdays that will educate people about this secretly negotiated agreement. These actions will build into major protests beginning in September. You can sign up and get involved here.  We urge you to do so. Continue Reading

Green Shadow Cabinet: Obama’s climate proposals fall dangerously short, ignore time-critical opportunity to revive economy

green shadow cabinetFrom the Green Shadow Cabinet:

The Green Shadow Cabinet said today that while President Obama’s call for the Environmental Protection Agency to strengthen regulation of carbon emissions from existing power plants was a long overdue step in the right direction, his “all of the above” approach to energy is still a disaster for the climate.

Dr. Jill Stein, the Green Party’s 2012 presidential nominees noted, “You can’t give your child an ‘all of the above diet’ with toxic lead and arsenic, and think that adding some spinach and blueberries is going to make it OK. Likewise, reducing carbon pollution from coal does not make fracking, tar sands oil, deep water and Arctic drilling OK. The climate is spiraling into runaway warming. Obama’s promotion of cheap dirty fossil fuels makes coal regulations just window dressing on a disastrous policy.”

In addition to its broad concerns on fossil fuel use, the Cabinet strongly opposes the Obama administration’s continued push to revitalize the expensive, dangerous, nuclear power industry. The massive subsidies required by the nuclear industry siphon away funds needed to expand renewable energy. Nuclear power still has lethal, unsolvable, long term waste-storage problems. In addition, the White House’s proposed plants could not be built in time to have a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

President Obama’s proposals fall far short of an urgently-needed Green New Deal to revive the American economy with clean, renewable energy. The Green New Deal would create 25 million jobs, particularly jobs that transition us to a carbon-free economy. It would be paid for through cuts to the military budget, elimination of the $40 billion in subsidies for fossil fuels and nukes, a Wall Street transaction tax yielding $100s of billions in revenue per year, and requiring the wealthy to pay their fair share. Green Shadow Cabinet joins critical struggle to defeat Trans-Pacific Partnership

From the Green Shadow Cabinet:

green shadow cabinetThe Green Shadow Cabinet stands united in opposition to the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and is committed to defeating this Obama administration effort to enrich and empower global corporations at the expense of people and planet.

For three years, the Obama administration has engaged in 16 rounds of secret negotiations to develop the TPP. Those negotiations have included hundreds of representatives of global corporations. The TPP negotiations have excluded representatives of the vast majority of the American people. It is a fact that the TPP is global economic policy for the 1%, at the expense of the 99%.

Today, all five branches and 81 members of the Green Shadow Cabinet begin to act in concert to not only defeat the TPP, but to show America that another government with another global economic agenda is possible. There is an alternative to the corrupt political establishment that produces economic terrors like the TPP. Our Cabinet is proof of that alternative. Continue Reading

Bruce Levine: The Green Shadow Cabinet and a Mental Health Declaration of Independence

Bruce Levine, the Green Shadow Cabinet’s Assistant Secretary of Health for Clinical Mental Health, recently wrote an  article for the Huffington Post entitled “The Green Shadow Cabinet and a Mental Health Declaration of Independence”. Here’s an excerpt:

The Green Shadow Cabinet, launched in spring 2013, is led by 2012 Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein. Its purpose is to provide an ongoing opposition and alternative voice to the dysfunctional U.S. government — and to demonstrate what a government of, by, and for the people (rather than of, by, and for giant corporations) looks like. As the Green Shadow Cabinet’s Assistant Secretary of Health for Clinical Mental Health, my first action is to propose a Mental Health Declaration of Independence from Big Pharma. I invite a public reaction to this declaration, which is both abolitionist and restorational: Continue Reading

Stay out of Syria, says Green Shadow Cabinet Foreign Affairs branch

p leah bolger Statement of Leah Bolger, Secretary of Defense and David Swanson, Secretary of Peace, of the Foreign Affairs Branch of the Green Shadow Cabinet:

The Obama administration has seemingly painted itself into yet another military corner by announcing that use of chemical weapons by Syria would constitute a red line that would mandate military action on the part of the United States. Now we are hearing reports that the red line may have been crossed, and some prominent officials are calling for the U.S. to step up its aid to the rebels and/or impose a no-fly zone. Proponents of military action such as Secretary of State John Kerry and hawkish Senator John McCain seem to think that the U.S. can sort out the “good guys” in the Syrian civil war, and use U.S. military assets to help the rebels take down the Assad government.p david swanson

U.S. military involvement in Syria could only make things worse. Syria does not need a “no fly” zone. It needs a “no weaponizing” zone. The White House and its allies need to stop arming one side of a civil war, and to persuade Russia to stop arming the other. Further escalating the violence will result in nothing that could outweigh the damage of that violence.

The Netanyahu government in Israel has just raised the ante in this precarious situation by conducting air-to-ground missile attacks against Syria, undoubtedly with the tacit approval of the United States. Allowing Israel to attack Syria without consequences is not only the sanctioning of a crime; it also allows momentum to develop for greater violence and pushes peaceful resolution further out of reach. Diplomacy must be actively pursued before it is too late.
