In the March edition of YC Magazine, York County (SC) Green Party writer Liz Smith-Anderson addresses our nation’s healthcare system and plans to change it.
This past year has been a trying one for many people. Losing your job means losing your health insurance, if you were lucky enough to work for a company that still provided health insurance as a benefit. During the past 12 years, health insurance policies were pared down to the minimum while the premiums escalated. Only God could help you if you had a pre-existing condition.
In the York County (SC) Green Party’s most recent monthly column in YC Magazine, writer Liz Smith-Anderson wrote about the War on Drugs, which rages on under the Obama administration despite hope for change. Here is the column.
The War on Drugs
A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to sit in on magistrate’s court here in York County. Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to witness. Young adult after young adult being sentenced for having a beer, a joint, and being under the legal age of 21, wherein the people over the age of 21 were then convicted and fined for providing the alcohol and or drugs to these “minors.” There didn’t seem to be much burden of proof, only the word of the officers who issued the tickets. Isn’t it sad that an 18 year old can own a gun but cannot legally consume alcohol? We ship these kids off to kill for our country but punish them severely for drinking a beer. Continue Reading
Shades of Green
By Liz Smith-Anderson
The election is over, the winner declared. The Democrats are dancing in the streets while the Republicans grimace and grind their teeth in an attempt to hide their disgust. Barack Obama won millions of votes by promising change. He has promised change in the way we deliver healthcare, the way we treat the environment, and has offered to protect our constitutional rights. Wait a minute. This sounds very ‘Green Party’ to me. Could it be that the radical thought paradigms of the far left have evolved into centrist thinking? Has the average citizen finally accepted that the way ‘things were done’ in the past just won’t work in today’s world. Is it possible that Obama will be ‘the one’ who pulls it all together and actually is able to move our nation towards that more perfect union dreamed of by our founders?
YC Magazine, a monthly magazine published and distributed only in York County SC, allows the Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians and Greens to write a monthly column. When I lived in York County I wrote several of these columns, as did Bryan Smith and Liz Smith-Anderson.
Over the next few days I will publish her text here. The York County (SC) Greens are fortunate to have this free access to the voters of York County. Enjoy!
A Row to Hoe
Green Party Perspective
By Liz Smith-Anderson
Originally, I was going to address the Green Party’s stance on recent Israeli acts of terrorism in Gaza…but now I find myself so hopeful, so full of patriotism that I can hardly stand to pen words of denouncement and anger. Not today, maybe not ever again. Who knows?
What I do know is that it is time to be accountable. I speak not only of myself but of all American Citizens. In keeping with my promise to Think Globally, Act Locally, I will begin here at home.
