Greens call for halt to endless-war policies, threats against Iran, Venezuela, and Russia

p green party peace memeFrom Green Party US:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Green Party leaders said that provocation and aggressive posturing by the U.S. against Iran, Venezuela, and Russia should be understood as dangerous attempts to assert U.S. political and economic hegemony abroad while maintaining a domestic wartime economy.

Many Greens are participating in “Spring Rising,” March 18-21, four days of anti-war and pro-peace events in Washington, D.C., that will mark the twelve-year point since the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq (http://SpringRising.org).

Greens said that a military confrontation between the U.S. and any one of these countries could trigger a wider, more destructive, and possibly global conflict. Party leaders noted that the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are responsible for one third of the national debt, as well as 700,000 wounded U.S. veterans and mass civilian casualties in both countries. Green Party opposes U.S. military aid for Ukraine

p Green Party US new logoFrom Green Party US:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Green Party opposes proposed plans to provide Ukraine’s armed forces military aid to fight rebels who are allegedly receiving assistance from Russia and urges President Obama to reject the advice of warhawk advisors and Congressmembers.

“Washington has used the people of Ukraine as chess pieces in a bid to strengthen NATO and isolate Russia politically, militarily, and economically, taking advantage of Russia’s vulnerability in the wake of sanctions and Saudi Arabia’s reduction of oil prices. Instead of seeking peace, the U.S. is aggravating tensions, risking a face-off with Russia that could spark a proxy war or even a global conflict. This game isn’t about self-defense for the U.S., it’s about expanding the power of NATO and enforcing the U.S.’s superpower status,” said Starlene Rankin, co-chair of the Green Party of the United States. Green Party: Prosecute officials who approved torture, including Bush & Cheney

From Green Party US:

p investigate tortureWASHINGTON, D.C. — The Green Party of the United States supports the demand by a U.N. special investigator that U.S. officials and CIA personnel who authorized and carried out torture must be prosecuted.

Ben Emmerson, the United Nation’s special rapporteur on counterterrorism and human rights, called for prosecution in the wake of a Senate Intelligence Committee report on CIA torture and “black sites” in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, released on Tuesday. Greens urged Sen. Mark Udall (D-Col.) to release the full report before he leaves office.

“The torture revelations — some of which were already known — show the extent to which the U.S. has turned into a ‘security state’ in which human rights and the rule of law have been abandoned. The Senate report exposes the appalling complicity of the Bush and Obama administrations and Democratic and Republican leaders in allowing torture and shielding officials who ordered or approved it from punishment,” said Darryl! L.C. Moch, national co-chair of the Green Party. Continue Reading

Green Party calls for deep cuts to bloated US military budget

WASHINGTON, DC — The Green Party today said the solution to the current impasse over sequestration and federal budget cuts is deep cuts in the military budget.

Green Party leaders said that cutting at least $300 billion per year from military spending would resolve the budget stalemate and would free up funds to reinvest in providing jobs and rebuilding the U.S. economy, including a rapid transition to carbon-free energy. Greens blame the current deficit on reckless imperial ventures around the world, costly and unnecessary defense contracts, and tax cuts for the rich.

“Since 2001, Presidents Bush and Obama have launched wars and military attacks that have drained the U.S. budget,” said T.E. Smith, Vietnam War veteran and a member of the DC Statehood Green Party. “These actions and various ‘homeland security’ boondoggles have made the defense budget a feeding trough for contractors — while Congress and the White House continued to pump more money into the military budget. It’s time to scale military operations and spending back to what’s needed strictly for defense of our borders.” Continue Reading

Green Party, responding to President Obama’s Sept. 8 address, calls ‘Green New Deal’ the key to job creation

Greens urge public works programs to provide millions of jobs and help convert America to a secure green economy

WASHINGTON, DC — Responding to President Obama’s speech Thursday night, the Green Party today called for a ‘Green New Deal’ to put Americans back to work while helping the US transition to a carbon-free green economy.

“We need a Green New Deal that will put all of the unemployed to work rebuilding America on the basis of an economically and ecologically sustainable prosperity. The green in the Green New Deal means we must go beyond the old New Deal and bring an environmental focus to our public investments, including clean manufacturing processes, to not only address the crisis of climate change but to build the foundation of a sustainable green economy,” said Jill Stein, co-chair of the Green-Rainbow Party of Massachusetts (http://www.massgreens.org) and author of “Jobs for All with a Green New Deal” (Green Papers, September 5, 2011, http://www.greenpapers.net/?p=164). Green Party condemns Freedom Flotilla massacre, urges immediate aid cutoff and end to impunity for Israel

WASHINGTON, DC — The Green Party of the United States condemns the attack by the Israeli navy on Gaza-bound humanitarian aid ships in international wates near Cyprus, which have left at least 19 human rights activists dead and at least 50 wounded.

“The attacks on the aid boats is a criminal act of piracy and a deliberate provocation,” said Dr. Justine McCabe, co-chair of the Green Party’s International Committee (http://www.gp.org/committees/intl).

“We demand immediate action from the US, including emergency orders from President Obama to cut off all aid to Israel.  The policies of the US regarding Israel and Palestine up to now have convinced Israel that it can act with impunity in committing massacres and massive human violations against Palestinian civilians.  These illegal and atrocious actions now include the murder of other countries’ citizens in international waters,” added Dr. McCabe, who recently returned to the US from Haifa, where she participated in a coalition of over 400 Jewish and Palestinian Israelis and internationals who met to promote the growing call for the one democratic state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Israel had earlier threatened to seize the Freedom Flotilla ships and arrest the activists when they entered Gaza coastal waters, but instead executed a surprise maneuver at night in international waters that resulted in death and mayhem for nonviolent activists attempting to deliver 10,000 tons of supplies to the people of Gaza.

2008 Green presidential nominee Cynthia McKinney has released a statement on the massacre (“Cynthia McKinney Mourns the Dead of the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza: People of the US and the world must end Israeli impunity now!,” http://gp.org/cynthia/display.php?ID=36).  Ms. McKinney, a former member of Congress from Georgia, was one of 21 human rights activists on board the Free Gaza relief boat seized by the Israeli navy in international waters when it tried to deliver medical and other humanitarian aid to Gaza in June 2009, in the wake of Israel’s invasion of Gaza.

Ms. McKinney and the other activists were held in an Israeli jail for several days.  See Green Party press releases issued between June 25 and July 14, 2009, on the party’s media page (http://www.gp.org/press.php).

“The US government’s lack of response to the seizing of the Free Gaza boat and jailing of a former member of Congress was interpreted by Israel as a license for even more extreme illegal actions,” said Starlene Rankin, co-chair of the Lavender Green Caucus (http://www.gp.org/caucuses/lavender/index.php).  “We urge all Americans who value justice, human rights, and peace to put pressure on the White House and on their Representatives and Senators to move right now to stop all aid to Israel and seek international condemnation of these acts.”

“We also urge Americans to be wary of the justifications for Israel’s crimes that will come from politicians, media commentators, AIPAC, and other apologists for Israel.  These justifications are meant to cover up atrocities, including yesterday’s murderous attack on the Freedom Flotilla,” said Ms. Rankin.
