Green Party of the US endorses, joins ‘October 2011’ protest against the Afghanistan and Iraq wars and 2012 austerity budget

Posted in National Greens, Press Release on September 27th, 2011 by Gregg Jocoy – 2 Comments

OCTOBER2011.orgIn a press release sent to Green Party Watch, the Green Party of the United States endorsed plans to engage in a long term protest in Washington DC. Echoing the call from October2011.org, the press release quotes Sanda Everette of California.

“In making this endorsement, we’re challenging the dangerous political direction of the US. We also challenge others who support ‘October 2011′ to recognize the Green Party’s leadership on the issues these events will address, such as endless wars, the demand for Medicare For All universal health care and millions of new jobs, and the need to end the control of top corporations over our political system,” said Sanda Everette, member of the Coordinating Committee of the Green Party of California and former co-chair of the Green Party of the United States. Ms. Everette will participate in the October 6 event.

Greens and others interested in supporting the party and the occupation of Freedom Plaza can check for local leadership at the October 2011 website. The full text of the press release is below the fold. read more »

Press conference: Statehood Greens urge Gray to back a Just DC Budget & Tax Plan, 3/28 before Mayor’s speech at Eastern HS

Posted in Local Party News on March 26th, 2011 by Ronald Hardy – Comments Off

WASHINGTON, DC — DC Statehood Green Party activists will challenge Mayor Vincent Gray on the District’s budget priorities at a press conference immediately preceding the Mayor’s ‘State of the District’ address on Monday, March 28.

The press conference will take place outside of Eastern High School, 1700 East Capitol Street NE, beginning at 6 pm. The Mayor’s speech begins inside the school at 6:45 pm.

“We will call on Mayor Gray not to balance the budget on the backs of DC’s working people and unemployed. We can make ‘One City’ a reality, if the Mayor and Council enact a ‘Just DC Budget and Tax’ plan,” said Alan Page, DC Statehood Green candidate for At-Large City Council in the April 26 special election (http://alanpagedc.blogspot.com).

Statehood Greens will offer a progressive alternative to DC’s present regressive income tax. The progressive plan would generate $250 million in additional revenue that should go into essential social services cut in recent years. This and other recommendations to balance the budget and restore essential funding in our budget are summarized below.

NBC: Is DC Statehood Green Party DC’s “Second Party”?

Posted in State Party News on October 26th, 2010 by Dave Schwab – Comments Off

NBC Washington has an article about the DC Statehood Green Party entitled “DC’s ‘Second Party’?”:

The D.C. Statehood Green Party styles itself the District’s “Second Party” — a barb directed not just at the city’s Republicans, but also at the notion that D.C. is a one-party town.

This year, the Statehood Greens have five candidates running for citywide office.

The party nominated perennial candidate, noted trumpet player, and former Marlon Brando paramour Faith for mayor, though with some reluctance — Faith actually received only 40 percent of the votes in the September primary, despite running unopposed…

Other contenders are making more serious efforts. Rick Tingling-Clemmons is challenging Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, while Joyce Robinson-Paul is on the ballot for shadow representative. Two veteran Statehood Green activists, Ann C. Wilcox and David Schwartzman, are running for citywide D.C. Council seats. (The party also has a candidate in Ward 1, Nancy Shia, who was nominated after winning the primary there as a write-in candidate.)

“Mayor of DC Hip-Hop” Head-Roc & Empower DC are launching a Concert Tour leading up to the DC General Election (Oct 19 – Nov 1). The purpose of the concert series is to encourage DC residents to vote AND to join an organization. Head Roc was a Presidential Candidate seeking the Green Party nomination in 2008 before withdrawing and endorsing Cynthia McKinney.

LeAlan Jones, Illinois Green Party candidate for US Senate participated in the Chicago Tribune debate (Video).

Ben Manski, Wisconsin Green Party candidate for the 77th State Assembly District in Madison, WI, was endorsed by the current (Democratic) Secretary of State Doug LaFollette, former (Democratic) Gubernatorial candidate and Fighting Bobfest organizer Ed Garvey, and former State Attorney General (Democrat) Peg Lautenschlager. Manski released this commercial now running on local cable:

Jill Stein, Green Party candidate for Governor of Massachusetts goes after Governor Patrick over his rosy view of the economy, saying

“What we’re seeing are oscillations of an economy that is fundamentally sick. Since 2002, two-thirds of the income growth in this country has gone into the pockets of the wealthiest 1%, and the rest of us have been falling behind. That’s why economists have had to invent the term ‘jobless recovery’. It’s a recovery that is scarcely visible in the lives of the 300,000 unemployed people in Massachusetts and the equal number of people who are underemployed and forced to work part-time.”

Green Party candidate for US Senate in California Duane Roberts calls for ending overseas wars to pay for tuition free higher education.

Illinois Green Party candidate for Governor Rich Whitney will be holding a press conference Monday October 11, 10 AM regarding debate exclusion. Check him out on WTTW’s Chicago Tonight (Video).

Green Party at One Nation Working Together rally in DC on Oct. 2 for jobs, justice, education, & peace

Posted in National Greens on September 22nd, 2010 by Dave Schwab – 7 Comments

WASHINGTON, DC — The Green Party of the United States has endorsed the One Nation Working Together march and rally in Washington, DC on Saturday, October 2 for “Jobs, Justice and Education” (http://www.onenationworkingtogether.org/content/main).

Theresa El-Amin, national co-chair of the Green Party, will serve as the party’s representative on the national steering committee of One Nation Working Together.  The Green Party’s liaison to the Peace Table will be George Martin, Wisconsin Green, member of the Green Party Black Caucus, and former national co-chair of United for Peace & Justice.

“Greens from all over the US will gather with many other organizations and movements on Oct. 2.  We’re at the Peace Table to let people know that trillions of dollars are being wasted on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that could be used for human needs in the US, especially green jobs, education, universal health care, and aid for people hit hard by the economic meltdown,” said Ms. El-Amin.

The Green Party will be part of the Peace Contingent (http://www.onenationforpeace.org), which calls the rally “an opportunity to help millions of people understand how the struggle to end the wars and occupation in Afghanistan and Iraq is directly tied to the urgent need to re-direct this nation’s economic and social priorities,” with a demand for deep cuts in military spending.

Greens call these goals consistent with the Green Party’s own positions, which include ending the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, drastically reducing the military budget, creating millions of green jobs among other efforts to offset global warming, enacting Medicare For All (Single-Payer national health care), and protecting Social Security. read more »

DC Statehood Greens primary results

Results are up from the DC Board of Elections!

Note that percentages do not add up to 100% because the ballot does provide for write-in candidacies. I have omitted write-ins where they do not seem to be a significant factor in the race. Onwards to the relevant results: read more »

DC Council Candidate Darryl Moch Endorsed by Cynthia McKinney

Posted in Local Elections on September 12th, 2010 by Ronald Hardy – 1 Comment

Former Congresswoman and 2008 Presidential Candidate Cynthia McKinney has come out with an endorsement of District of Columbia City Council candidate Darryl Moch.

I am Cynthia McKinney and I endorse Darryl L.C. Moch for DC City Council. Darryl Moch asked me to endorse his candidacy for D.C. City Council At-Large. Let me tell you why I said ‘yes, I will,’ and I do. Darryl and I believe the ideals of social justice in the Green Party are attainable. For Darryl in D.C., it’s the Statehood Green Party. He has worked literally as a national voice for American workers’ rights; he has also been a leading voice for HIV/AIDs prevention and treatment and equal access to college education for minority students. He’ll bring that same energy and activism to local issues; he commits to listen and represent residents who want public education respectful of parents and teachers, locally owned businesses that hire and pay qualified residents, and programs that provide access to affordable housing, child care, and transportation. Darryl Moch’s D.C. has statehood and a government accountable to the people. He has already rolled up his sleeves, working to replace the sharp socioeconomic divide in D.C. with a respect for its culturally rich past and a shared prosperity in its revitalization.

Over 100 leading peace activists have announced an ‘Emergency Anti-Escalation Rally’ at the White House on December 12, from 11a.m. to 4 p.m., to reject President Obama’s planned military escalation in Afghanistan.
