WASHINGTON, DC — In honor of Thomas Jefferson’s 267th birthday, the Green Party of Florida and the People’s Lobby Coalition for Public Funding Only of All Elections will hold a forum on the influence of corporate lobbies on US elections.  The forum will take place at the National Press Club (http://npc.press.org) in Washington, DC, at 7 pm on Tuesday, April 13, 2010.

The speakers will discuss ‘Money Morality’ and the effect of corporate money on health care, energy, the economy, treatment of the poor, and other major issues, with an analysis of military expenditures in light of campaign contributions from defense contractors.

“We’ll talk about the correlation between the influence of the 13,000 special interest lobbyists and our elected officials’ voting trends in relation to these issues.  And we’ll propose necessary changes to our election system to restore democracy,” said Jennifer Sullivan, organizer of the event.

The event is open to the public, with doors opening at 7 pm.  Admission is free for all members of the media with proper ID.  General admission is a suggested donation of $10.00 or $15.00 per couple; no one will be turned away.

Greens to participate in 12/12 DC Antiwar Rally

Posted in Peace & Non-Violence on December 4th, 2009 by Dave Schwab – Comments Off

Over 100 leading peace activists have announced an ‘Emergency Anti-Escalation Rally’ at the White House on December 12, from 11a.m. to 4 p.m., to reject President Obama’s planned military escalation in Afghanistan. The rally is organized by End US Wars, a newly formed coalition of national and grass-roots antiwar organizations, with endorsements from leading peace leaders.

Rally organizers are calling for the left wing to end its support for Obama if he declares a surge in troops, and for condemnation of Obama’s war policy by his own party faithful. In addition, efforts will begin to cut short his term in office, along with Congress; and protests will intensify against U.S. war involvement in Afghanistan, Iraq and any other countries.

Speakers include Green Party members Cynthia McKinney, Lynne Williams, Marian Douglas and others including Sen. Mike Gravel, Kathy Kelly, Chris Hedges, David Swanson, Phyllis Bennis, Rev. Graylan Hagler, Coy McKinney, Debra Sweet, Brian Becker, Mathis Chiroux, Hon. Betty Hall, Elaine Brower, Michael Knox, Ralph Lopez, Ron Fisher, and statements from Col. Ann Wright, Stephen Zunes and Granny D. read more »

McLarty: Fire Departments and Health Care

Posted in Editorials, National Greens, Social & Economic Justice on May 18th, 2009 by Gregg Jocoy – Comments Off

Green Party Media Coordinator Scott McLarty writes an editorial about single payer healthcare, comparing our modern health insurance based health care system to the way we once approached fire protection.

Imagine that you needed a special insurance policy before calling the fire department in an emergency, or you’d have to pay thousands of dollars out-of-pocket for the firefighters to put out the fire.

So why do we tolerate a health care system that’s run the same way?

McLarty goes on to explain exactly where the savings in single payer healthcare comes from, the profits and overhead of corporate for-profit systems that add cost, but no value.

The overhead for Medicare, based on administrative costs but without the demand for profit, is about 3%. Why not convert to a public system, expanding Medicare to cover all Americans, perhaps saving us a third of the cost by eliminating the insurance and HMO middlemen — a system comparable to our public fire departments?

McLarty goes on to ask why we don’t have single payer healthcare today, and answers

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the amount of such (political) contributions (from HMOs and Insurance interests) was over $46 million in 2008

DC Greens Respond to Washington Post McKinney Piece

Posted in Presidential Campaign on October 30th, 2008 by Ronald Hardy – 7 Comments

On Monday, the Washington Post published an article on Cynthia McKinney in the “Style” section entitled: “Stealth Candidacy“. While media coverage of the Green Party is rare from news publications such as the Washington Post, when it happens it is usually a wee bit negative. This article starts: “Spies. They’re probably in the room, she says ominously.” You can imagine the direction this is going to take from that start (or read it yourself).

Adding further insult to injury, the Washington Post chose to omit Cynthia McKinney from their Presidential Candidates web page, choosing instead to stick with Barack Obama and his three leading white male opponents (Chuck Baldwin was left off as well, as proof that it wasn’t a conspiracy against women).

The DC Greens have responded with the following release and well written response to the “Stealth Candidacy” article:

WASHINGTON, DC — The following response to an October 27 Washington Post article on Green presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney was prepared with the intent of submitting as a guest column.

Greens call out “Police State”

Posted in Social & Economic Justice on August 18th, 2008 by Ronald Hardy – 2 Comments

Press Release from the Green Party of the United States:

Greens call military-style police measures and violation of citizens’ rights a “breakdown of law”

Greens condemn curfews, anti-constitutional police harassment of innocent citizens in Arkansas and DC, and the War on Drugs as “self-defeating” in efforts to eliminate crime

WASHINGTON, DC — Green Party candidates and leaders called the 24-hour curfew imposed on the city of Helena-West Helena, Arkansas, a gross violation of the rights of local citizens and a symptom of the rapid growth of unrestrained police power over the past two decades.

Politicians and law enforcement officials have justified such measures as part of the war on drugs. Greens have endorsed an immediate end to the drug war, calling it a catastrophic failure.

“A city that hands its police force a license to trash the constitutional rights of its citizens is not a city that is upholding law and order and protecting its citizens. On the contrary, unlimited police power is a complete breakdown of the law,” said Joshua Drake, Arkansas Green Party nominee for Congress (4th District).

Green Party Day at the Washington Post

Posted in State Party News on July 31st, 2008 by Ronald Hardy – Comments Off

Today was “Green Party Day” at the Washington Post, where they posted two stories (one tongue in cheek) in response to a small protest in front of the Post building. The Greens were protesting the lack of coverage the Washington Post provides toward the Green Party, which in DC is virtually the second party after the Democrats.

The tongue in cheek article:

A group of about 15 protestors and candidates from a Certain Political Party That Will Go Unnamed gathered outside the Washington Post building today to protest their belief that the company “routinely ignores or marginalizes the party’s candidates.”

However another article with less wit was also posted:

The protest was partially inspired by a May 29 online discussion with Post congressional reporter Paul Kane, in which he said, “We don’t have enough resources to cover [the Green Party].”

The Post’s executive editor, Leonard Downie Jr., said Kane isn’t the one who makes those decisions.

“What we’ve been covering up until now is the nomination process of the two major parties,” Downie said. Future coverage of third-party candidates, he said, “would be based on the past performance of those candidates, and how much interest we think our readers have in them.”
